Top of the World

It's been awhile between posts, but I have a good excuse. I've been back in Alaska with the family enjoying life at the top of the world again. This is the first time in over 30 years I've been in Alaska without owning anything here. I realized very quickly that if you don't own anything you don't have anything to take care of. Buddhists figured this out a long time ago and that's why they are always smiling. I have been smiling too -- kicking stones on the beach with the boys, borrowing boats to see the bay, and generally enjoying the good weather, fresh fish and most excellent company. Now, it's back to Vermont where my tractor waits quietly for me.

Tom,

Sounds like the trip was everything that you had hoped it to be. Question: Did you bring your guitar or perhaps more importantly...were you inspired and compelled to pick up the guitar upon your return ?

All the best,
Jay

Hey Jay,

We had a terrific time. No guitar playing. I hardly have my calluses anymore, I play so little. I used to take my ax everywhere I went and would pull it out - to the chagrin of many - at the drop of a hat. And then...what happened..? Oh, that's right, I had children.

Hmmm....

I leave mine out and on the stand.
You are more liable to squeeze in a half hour or so ... and remember, I have 5 progeny of my own, and now that I am Grandpa, its gives me a chance to entertain little Zoe.

Tom, strange question, but is there any way that you could post the name of the song in the background of the Motel 6 commercials is? I've been looking for a while and can't find it. Thanks a lot.

The background music was played by a New York folk artist named Roger Sprung and his band.

Actually, the music for the Motel 6 commercials was composed exclusively for the campaign by a Dallas musician by the name of Tom Faulkner. Milo (Last name lost to the dust bin of my mind) plays the fiddle.
I read that piece on Roger Sprung Anon#2 posted and I think what they are implying is not that Sprung wrote the piece, but that he was performing it as a mystery piece until it was recognized as the Motel 6 theme.
To my knowledge it has never appeared anywhere by anyone outside of the ad campaign.

That's all I know about that.

Tom:

Hope you're well. Personal question, are you writing? Enjoyed your essays and "The Free Fall of Webster Cummings." Would really enjoy reading more.

Thanks.

Joan, As one who tries to pass myself off as a professional writer I don't think that is exactly a personal question, but it is a good question. I haven't been writing much lately. Lying fallow, I tell myself. With two kids, a new tractor, and a list of chores as long as my last book I find myself easily called away from the writing desk. See my essay "A Writer Who Doesn't" listed on the right of my Home page. That pretty much tells the story. Thanks for asking.

Tom,
I just fpund your blog whilst searching for the Motel 6 theme song and thought I'd pass along a bit of info. The fiddle player is Milo Deering. For anyone wishing to obtain an MP3 pr ringtone you can use this link/ http://www.mytinyphone.com/ringtone/2166172/

It might sound strange but I have always enjpyed you M6 commercials and figured anypne who spoke with a voice like yours had to be a decent person. Lookingat your blog, I guess I was right.
